How to deal with a Narcissist in my Workplace


 


In a recent encounter with a workplace narcissist, I found myself navigating a maze of manipulations and self-centered theatrics. This individual was incessantly fixated on highlighting what others weren't doing, while painting themselves as the solitary hero, looking for recognition and deeply concerned about the organization's welfare.

Their tactics were cunning, often dropping my name in conversations with co-workers to imply authority or influence, and orchestrating group meetings to ensure everyone heard their version of events. They sought alliances through manipulation, suggesting others would corroborate their claims.

To address these challenges, we conducted thorough investigations into every allegation. The key was to interview each person privately with a witness present, stressing the importance of confidentiality. Despite our efforts, we couldn't substantiate their claims. We reinforced our policies and guidelines on reporting, particularly emphasizing the dangers of gossip and hearsay, and established clear boundaries and processes for reporting issues or concerns.

However, the employee persisted, culminating in a dramatic outburst in my office, tearfully accusing us of disbelief. In another instance, after informing them of our findings, we discovered that they were actually the source of disruptions, spreading negative rumors about others. We gathered statements from multiple employees, obtained video evidence, and even had the individual admit to their actions.

The situation took a surprising turn when, confronted with the evidence, the employee fainted in my office. Thankfully, they were physically unharmed, but it became evident that they were in need of mental health care. After taking a few weeks off to receive treatment and medication, they returned to work with a renewed focus.

Upon their return, I documented our expectations clearly and set firm boundaries. Since then, the employee has been more productive and has shown a commitment to their work, significantly reducing disruptions in the workplace.

This experience taught me the importance of addressing narcissistic behavior with empathy and understanding, while also maintaining firm boundaries and upholding organizational policies. It also underscored the critical role mental health care plays in addressing personal challenges that may manifest in the workplace.
